Gate House, Town Centre, Doncaster
Unit 8, Priory Walk, High Street Town Centre Doncaster DN1 1TS Tel: 01302 554540 WWW: Gate House
The J D Wetherspoon pub is part of the Forum Centre, which occupies the site of the gatehouse to a medieval friary. The Gate House is probably the oldest of Highgate's inns and stood next to the toll gate, or high gate, on the road to the north. The earliest written reference to the Gatehouse is in 1670, although its 19th century owners claimed that there had been an inn on the site since 1337. More recently, in 1905, the building was renovated in the mock-Tudor style that remains today.
The High Street entrance to the Subscription Rooms was erected on the site of the main entrance to the House of Carmelites. A deed of 1609 refers to the Priory's Great Gatehouse. Excavations carried out in the mid-1970s reveal that "the brick and stone footings of the Subscription Rooms were cut through those of the Bay Horse Public House". Fragments of the Carmelite Friary were probably used in the building of the new betting rooms. The Priory itself is recalled by the White Friar - another pub, soon to open in nearby Hall Gate.
